Southern Methodist University Seeks New Board Member in James Dondero

James Dondero has just joined the Executive Board at Southern Methodist University Cox School. The business school appointed Dondero to their board of around 100 members earlier this month. As the co-founder and President of Highland Capital Management, Dondero will prove to be a valuable asset to the school’s Executive Board. The group meets three times a year-in the fall winter and spring- to discuss the strategies of the business school. Having business headquarters in Dallas, Highland Capital Management is always interested in enhancing the business culture in the area.

Dondero was educated at the University of Virginia from which he graduated with highest honors. After this, Dondero continued his education at the McIntire School of Commerce. He graduated with double majors in Accounting and Finance. Being interested in the equity and credit markets, Dondero furthered his expertise by gaining several certifications. He is qualified as a Chartered Financial Analyst, Certified Management Accountant and as a Certified Public Accountant.

Before establishing Highland Capital Management, James Dondero began working as an analyst in 1984 at the Morgan Guaranty training program. Protective Life hired Dondero in 1989 to help grow their GIC subsidiary. Dondero also worked at American Express from 1985 to 1989. His first position was as a Corporate Bond Analyst before becoming a Portfolio Manager of a large sum.

In 1993 James Dondero and his partner Mark Okada founded Highland Capital Management. The company has grown exponentially since it’s inception to become a leading managers of alternative credit. Numerous clients have entrusted Highland Capital Management with around $16 billion worth of assets. The company is known for their leading development in Collateralized Loan Obligation market. Highland Capital offers countless services and products from mutual, private and hedge funds to alternative investments and private equity.

Dondero’s 30 years of experience in the credit markets have made him a sought after adviser. He currently is on the board for major companies MGM Studios and American Banknote. Dondero also serves as Chairmen of Cornerstone Health Care, CCS Medical and Nexbank. Some of Dondero’s charitable focuses include public policy, Veteran’s affairs and education.
